When I was younger, I always believed that I would grow up to be a writer. a marine biologist. a zoologist.

When I grew older I realised that one by one, my dreams flew out of my reach.

I can't write for nuts, neither can I understand the complicated genetics and molecular compounds of animals.

Most of the people have found themselves, but I don't think I have.

I was trying so hard to search but instead got lost in the process.

I wonder what the hell am I doing in IT?
Designing, drawing, scripting, programming.
Is this what I really want to do?

Korea

Hello Korea.

Its been more than a month since we left you.

How have you been?

Eventhough we both constantly complain about the work that we had to do in the cafe.

About cleaning the tables, making coffee, and mopping the floor.

Being friends with these people makes it all worth it.

You sent winter in a sudden.

I still remember my roomates screaming about it snowing outside in the middle of the night.

Thanks to you, classes were cancelled and we had the day to ourselves.

Freezing in the cold.

I still cannot make up my mind about liking Winter or Spring better.

Spring was as lovely as Winter

I remember someone asking me a long time ago,

"Melissa, i've always only seen you in long hair, try cut short hair?"

And i laughed and said,

"Haha.. i would cut like really short hair if i break up with my bf"

And I could have the courage to say it out loud because I thought that we would never be apart.

But now the more i think about it, the more ridiculous that sounded, because as a friend told me before, never believe in the word Forever. Simply because its stupid and it doesn't exist.

When I was going through my family's really old photos, my Grandauntie showed me a picture of my Granduncle and his wife. Their engagement photograph. That photo was easily 50-60 Years ago. My grandauntie passed away in 2005. And until this date, my granduncle's calendar has never been torn. It was always on the 18th of Februrary, the day my grandauntie died. Her things still remain untouched in the room. That was when I realised, I started to wonder, how could my granduncle cope, without his wife?

Sometimes I wonder why do people get themselves involved in relationships. Its damn sanfu lor ok. You have to maintain it, have to take your partner's feelings in consideration when making any decisions. Ok fine. You're deeply in love, get married, have kids. Then what? Many people find their partners for companionship. Thats the basic human need. What happens after living together, for twenty, thirty, fourty years? Your partner dies. Or you die. Leaving the other person alone. And hoping that the other half would be able to pick herself back up, and live independently. How is that possible when you both have been dependent on each other almost for your entire lives?

I may not seem like a strong person. Even i myself doubt my capabilities. But im going to prove this to myself. I will not crumble. This is just a lesson for myself.

And so, my Seoul trip is coming to an end. Somehow or another we ended up in Suwon, from almost ten people cancelling off to just the three of us. I love these trips that we don't have any obligation, just to go out and have fun.

The Torturous Climb.

Why does my leg look super awkward in photos ? Taken at the 2nd highest point of Baek Yang mountain.

It was a last minute plan, that we were to meet at the school bus stop at 8am in the morning to go mountain climbing. And yes, it was Children's Day which meant that it was a public holiday !

So off we went to the starting point at Mora, hiking up the torturous hill. We started off hiking at 9:15 in the morning, and got down again at around 3-4 ish. It was a difficult climb :(

And yes, all of us are Chinese.

Although i think that it would be fun to do it again ! There are many old women and men climbing the hill. And I guess its really quite true that a Korean's hobby is climbing mountains. And since i came down late in the morning, i didn't have breakfast..and we didn't stop for lunch. So.. I climbed the mountain with only a packet of milk (in the morning) and a few biscuits here and there.

Am I awesome pawsome or what !

It was half-past six in the morning ..

It was half-past six in the morning and i was feeling extremely cold. I felt the morning breeze piercing through my skin. I was feeling very tired. Infact, most of the time, i would spend my nights sleeping on a battered couch. It was not like this before. I had a loving family and a cozy home. It is all gone now.

Ever since you left, I had no choice but to seek shelter among the drug addicts. Tears rolled down my cheeks, but stops abruptly. I am tired of crying. Until now my mind still wonders, why did you leave ? The baby who rests on my lap starts to cry due to hunger. I hated this baby as he looks just exactly like you. Our little Daniel reminds me of you.

I am lost in my thoughts. My mind somehow pushes me back into the past. The time when I first set my eyes on you, i remember you, your messy jet black hair, your well-built physique and most importantly, your piercing brown eyes put me into trance. Somehow you did not seem to notice me much, not until your friends nudged you and asked you to look at my direction. I blushed profusely and quickly turned away.

My mind is racing as I started to blabber a long string of senseless words. You asked me out ! IT was my first time going on a date with a guy. You took me to a fine dining restaurant. You bought me beautiful flowers and on the night, you asked me to be yours. You promised that you would love me forever and I would be your one and only. Being only a naive sixteen year old, I promptly agreed and that was the night I got my very first kiss.

Little Daniel's crying was becoming more amplified. I was so absorbed in my feelings that I had forgotten about our son. I rose and quickly asked if the others had food. There was only a few pieces of biscuits left. I added a little water to make it soggy. I looked at Daniel, he had your best feature of all, your beautiful brown eyes. Is it possible to love and hate someone at the same time ? I asked myself.

I remember the time when you had to further your studies in the States. It was physical and mental torture to let you go. I have become so dependent on you, that now without you, I feel lost. I have been crying all the way home, after sending you off. Mother and father did not want to console me. They did not approve on me being involved in a relationship at such a tender age.

I did not hear from you for weeks. My heart constantly aches for you. It seems to sense the unfamiliar pang of loneliness which it is not used to. I almost gave up any hope, thinking that you did not want me anymore. I asked around and finally got hold of you. You gave me tons of excuses, assuring me that you still loved me the way you did before. I loved you too much to let go, I trusted and believed you.

Our son said his first word, 'papa'. Why you ? Looking at Daniel, i remembered your expressions when I told you i was pregnant. You told me that you were sorry that you were not careful. I was eighteen that time. You asked for my hand in marriage. My mother almost burst in rage when she found out about our little bundle of joy.

My parents were awfully mad at my foolish actions. They did not turn up at our wedding. I lied. Remember I told you they were overseas? My parents decided to disown me. They did not want this lousy daughter. They were embarassed.

And so, we started a family together. You played your role as a loving husband and a caring father-to-be. Things changed when you came home late, drunk most of the nights. I did not question you much as I trusted you. Assuming your clients asked you for a drink. I was five months pregnant at that time.

I could feel little Daniel moving about in my womb. It is like an extra burden, but it took pride in me that I am actually carrying a child. Our child. I had my usual mood swings. One day, you came home and yelled at me for no particular reason. You yelled and said that I was nothing but a burden to you. You slapped me and said that you regretted ever getting married to me. You were drunk at that time. You asked for a divorce. I could do nothing but beg for your forgiveness and cry profusely. You ignored me and kicked me out from our room. Why the sudden change ? What did i do to make you mad ?

The next morning you were putting all my belongings into a garbage bag. Expelling me out of your house. I was eight months pregnant with no where to go. My friends looked at me in disgust when i turned up at their doorstep with an eight month old baby inside me. I could not go back to my family. Why did you not love me anymore ? I am confused. My emotions are taking over my body.

Suddenly I felt an extreme stabbing pain. I fell on my knees, not forgetting to protect our son. I loss conscious. When I woke up,m I was in a comfortable place. There was something struggling on my right shoulder. I looked and I saw our son. I wanted to tell the doctor I did not want that filthy thing but I could not. Daniel reminded me just so much about you and it is my only memory left of you.

A tall man suddenly appeared in front of me. He is very muscular. He stretched out his arms and demands me to give him Daniel. He takes our baby away from my arms and walks away. He has taken my only memory of you. He aims a gun at my head and tells me if I try to take the baby back, he would shoot me without hesitation. I stopped and started to sob. Pleading that I wanted Daniel back. The man ignored my pleas and walked away. Who is he ? Are you the one who asked him to bring the baby back to you ? For all i know now is that everything would never be the same again.

I had such an unproductive day. Awoken at ten in the morning with people banging my door, coming in, turning on all the lights, the sink and the shower. Leaving without switching the lights back off. Couldn't go back to sleep. Lazed around until twelve thirty and headed down for lunch. After having horrible lunch, stayed at Pan Dorothy's Cafe and had a cup of cafe latte with Jun Haw as my companion. We both played games, L4D, GunBound, and The Sim3 until dinner, at half past six. After equally horrible dinner, headed back up, ate snacks, watched movies, studied 10 pages of Korean, and started off with a new drama. Now its one fifteen in the morning. And tomorrow is another weekend. Why are our weekends like this. :(

A part of me loves everything about Korea. The weather, the people, the language, the culture, the food (chicken delivery ftw). But a part of me wants to go home, back to Malaysia. Its already April by tomorrow. And in three months my time here is up. My 'run-away-from-reality' period is over. I'm still thinking, if I should stay on. Stay in Korea, to do my degree, or just return home and settle there. If I were to apply for the scholarship, i'll be here for five years, including a year fully concentrated on the language. Can I leave home for such a long period of time? Leave everything that I have back home, my family, my best friends, food, and the comfort of home? These questions still run about in my mind. How much do I want to be here. Do I need an overseas certificate? If I were to stay here, would I be able to cope with the language? I've realised how poor my Korean language is, if compared to the others who've been here the same time as I have. It's like how I couldn't write equations for Chemistry, or solve differential equations in Mathematics, when everyone else could. Convince me, that home is better than staying here. Because its really different. Friends especially. I realised how I'm the one who's always keeping in touch, the one who says Hi. I wonder if the friends i would make in the future here be the same? Maybe i'm just tired. Am I a different person since i've been here? Or would I go back to the restrictions of home. I don't even know what I'm rambling about anymore. I'm just letting my fingers and my mind connect. Do I really want to do a major in IT ? I've told myself countless of times to stick to what I choose, and not to give myself choices as the grass is not always greener on the other side. Living here for a year is fine, but five years?

PETALING JAYA: Despite public furore, Veterinary Services Department (DVS) deputy directorgeneral, Datuk Dr Ahmad Suhaimi Omar, is sticking by his suggestion last week that stray dogs held at pounds be sold for human consumption — as a method of stray management.

While acknowledging it was a "sensitive" statement, the DVS deputy DG in charge of veterinary health, told The Malay Mail his words were unnecessarily 'sensationalised'.

He insisted that the suggestion would create a "win-win" situation, explaining that stray dogs captured are now kept for seven days — and humanely euthanised if the dogs remained unclaimed after the week.

"Once the dog is caught and nobody claims it, what do you suggest we do? If people want to consume (dogs), why not let them?

"We have to pay for euthanasia as it has to be done professionally by a veterinarian. In any case, who are we to euthanise any animal?" posed Dr Ahmad.

If the slaughter of an animal is for the purpose of consumption, Dr Ahmad argued that "in principle, most religions would basically allow the slaughter".

Still, he pointed out that he was not asking people to just eat dog meat. He argued that foreigners like the Vietnamese and Koreans consume dog meat; and understood this was a sensitive issue for Malaysian culture and standards.

"We should not impose our values onto others. If you cannot eat dog meat, you cannot stop me from taking it. Like pork, for example. I cannot eat it but I cannot stop you from eating it.

"This is how we have been able to live harmoniously in Malaysia. We have to be open. It is an individual decision, if others want to eat it, it is up to them."

Stating he was merely throwing in the idea, he told The Paper That Cares: "I knew it was sensitive, I purposely said it. It was high time to say it. The NGOs are all against it and I know the dog is a pet to most of us."

Even a farmer, who has raised his cattle lovingly would not be willing to eat the animal when slaughtered, he noted.

"I do stress that if the dogs are to be slaughtered, it must then be done properly and there should be no cruelty at all."

Dr Ahmad also claimed that while there were a few people who objected to his suggestion at the forum on effective animal pound management, organised by the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council Canine Advisory Team on March 2, he felt the body language of many there suggested they were "excited" by his words.

The suggestion to sell caught stray dogs for consumption will help ease the system and reduce the council's problem.

"Let this be a lesson to pet owners to not let their dogs stray. It is a matter of responsible pet ownership. We have to educate pet owners, but this will take a long time."

Howling in horror over statements

CHIN: Labels Dr Ahmad's suggestion 'barbaric'

KUALA LUMPUR: Animal lovers are up in arms over the suggestion by Veterinary Services Department's (DVS) top man condoning the slaughter of stray dogs for human consumption.

Describing the suggestion as barbaric, the Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is now demanding that DVS deputy director-general (veterinary health) Datuk Dr Ahmad Suhaimi Omar, retract this suggestion.

Visibly upset, SPCA chaiman Christine Chin told The Malay Mail that SPCA was extremely disappointed with Dr Ahmad’s suggestion — especially in view of his position as the “number two or three person in DVS, who should be promoting humane, sustainable, effective and acceptable solutions to the stray problem".

“He is not a nobody,” Chin pointed out. "As a possible DVS director-general candidate, he is supposed to be protecting the animals.

"He is in charge of prosecuting people who are cruel to animals.”

While she felt Dr Ahmad did make some good suggestions during the March 2 forum on effective animal pound management, Chin described the dog meat suggestion as having thrown DVS back to the dark ages and undermined every bit of good DVS had ever done, especially in drafting its 2008 guidelines on humane dog-catching methods.

Stating that Dr Ahmad's suggestion was "barbaric, inhumane, provocative, unbelievable and incredulous", she said: “We are a society that doesn’t eat dogs. It is not a custom in Malaysia.

"Even in China, animal lovers have banded together to seek legal amendments to ban the consumption of dogs and cats. In Taiwan, it is illegal. What about cats?”

Meanwhile, Malaysian animalassisted therapy society for the disabled and elderly (Petpositive) president, Anthony Thanasayan, described Dr Ahmad’s suggestion as “misplaced and terribly insensitive.”

THANASAYAN: Dogs are life savers

He said the suggestion only reflected how out of touch DVS was.

“That he thinks dogs are only good as food on the table shows what he thinks of the role animals have been playing in our society, especially today.

“Dr Ahmad must remember that if a building falls down and he gets caught in the rubble, it is not a chicken that will come to save him. He would have to rely on the dog he suggests we eat.”

He said dogs are loving and play a positive role such as saving people’s lives and helping those in need of therapy.

Noting sarcastically that Dr Ahmad may have felt he was being clever, Thanasayan said the suggestion was purely a cerebral statement and not from the heart.

“Whatever he was trying or hoping to do, it did not work… he might as well ask us to eat our children.”

Thanasayan also pointed out that dogs from the pounds often carried disease and no one would want to or should eat such meat.

Aduhai. If you want to get rid of strays, im sure there are better ways to do it lah ok.

Not by encouraging the people to eat them.

So there are pests everywhere, why not start putting cockroaches, rats in our soup?

Rats are just another animal's meat what. Not meh.

Many Malaysians, pet lovers or not, would disagree to his suggestion as it simply isn't our culture, not our norm to consume dogs, or cats. In fact, many of us own dogs or cats as our pets, and are treated part of our family.

Dosen't mean that strays are aplenty we should kill them all.

Don't anyone remember the Dodo bird incident ?

Now we are so many years ahead of that incident, shouldn't we be progressing, moving forward, instead of repeating the moves of our ancestors?

SPCA Says : It is illegal to eat dogs & cats in Hong Kong, Korea and Philippines and it is banned in Taiwan. China's growing middle class is pushing for a law against the eating of dogs & cats in their progressive country. It is shocking that Malaysian authorities are proposing eating dogs as a means to curb the stray dog population. As protectors of animals, it is a shame to propose this barbaric, inhumane, cruel and totally unacceptable solution. Instead they should propose humane, effective, sustainable and socially acceptable measures like high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter clinics and promote Responsible Pet Ownership.

Speak Up For The Voiceless

Please write in to the authorities, and tell them politely but firmly that you would like to illegalize the eating of cats and dogs in Malaysia – like Hong Kong, Korea, Philippines, and Taiwan have done. It is not in the Malaysian culture to eat these domestic animals, and it is a cruel trade that many animal welfare organizations worldwide are lobbying to ban.

저는 취미가 많이 있습니다. 제 취미는 애니메이션을 보고, 영화 보고 하고 책을는 것입니다. 하지만, 저는 제일 좋아하는 취미는 애니메이션을 보는 갓입니다. 저는 10살 때부터 심슨을 보았습니다. 그래서, 애니메이션 중에서는 심슨일과 제일 좋아 합니다. 그리고, 심슨에서 바트 리는 캐락터를 가장 좋아합니다. 심슨 캐릭터 와 줄거리가 재미 있습니다.

The passage above talks about what my hobby is.

Writing the passage in Korean also made me realize how easy writing it in English would be. I would probably spend just less than 2 minutes coming up with those Seven sentences.

In Korean, it took me two whole days, a whole lot of headache, and a lot of help from my Korean roommate (fixing out all the missing and wrong grammar).

I don't know about you guys but if you know me well enough, you would know that I always had a thing for teachers. And when I was doing my Korean homework, this song started playing on my iTunes. And I wondered, why not blog about this?

I just finished watching Glee last week. Sort of completed the entire season in 2 days. And how can you resist Will Schuester's charm in the movie? Come ON ! You have to admit he's better looking and cuter than Finn. Heh. Plus, when he was singing this song aiyo super cute la ok.

This is a list that I've came up with on why you should date/woo a teacher ;)

Besides, why shouldn't you ?

1. You get special attention in class of course!

2. You'll be the girl whom people talk about.

"Oh my god, isn't she dating our super cute English lecturer?"

3. If he's cute, +++ points, as girls, and maybe some guys would be super jealous of you.

4. You would most likely get an A+ in class, unless he wants to fail you to keep you in his class.

5. Older men (as in maybe 8years+) have more experience. Heh.

Anyway, please don't take me seriously. Its just a weird thing that I have. Don't have the mentality that I go for my lecturers ok. I don't.

Ghost Stories

I know its so odd that one period of time I haven't been updating my blog and now i'm updating this on a daily basis. I couldn't resist not jotting this down.

Today, Na Min helped me with my Korean homework. Finally getting at least a quarter of it done. I wish I could pick Hangul faster though.

Today was the official first day of work in the English Cafe with the new people. Jun Haw and I were very pleased that we do not have to do as much work as we had last week. In result, we had 30 rounds of Mario Party on our Nintendo.

The night was spent having Chinese Fried Rice for dinner, and Chinese snacks brought in by Na Min, given by her Chinese friend, plus laughter in the room as ghost stories were told. I told them a few stories regarding Pontianaks and Banana trees, as well as stories from BBGS. In return I had ghost stories from Korea.

I have obtained a personal fridge, which is my balcony. I keep most of my groceries there, including bread, milk, yogurt and eggs. My roommates having cookies and other stuff. Hope the cold weather would not turn hot that soon. Currently loving the weather. Cold enough to not sweat, and hot enough to wear leggings with a short skirt. Awesome.

Jun Haw and I have spent the entire morning in this room playing Mario Kart as the others take care of the cafe. Finally some rest ! Schedules are only out on Wednesday, so till then, the English cafe is my home. Haha!

Self Realization

You know how they say that everyone needs something new once in awhile. And since i've came over to Korea, my old blog has completely died along with the old me. I somehow grew tiresome of the blog i used to have. I hated the template and was too lazy to get a new one, because of all the links and stuff. When i was creating this new one, I thought of the people i wanted to link. I wanted to link people, whom i still talk to, whom i still actually bother to read his or her blog. At my older blog, i had like 30-40 people linked, which includes my high school friends, and people whom I don't know.

Its funny how things can just change drastically in a few years. It has been 2 years since i've left high school, a year since i've completed CIMP, and I have been in Korea for six months. With me being here, i've realised who are my friends and who aren't. Those who still bother to contact me, those who still drop by my facebook, to say hi, or even leave me messages on Skype saying Hi. Its all those little things that people do for each other is what matters the most. And you know who you guys are. *huuugs*

Meanwhile, the new Cambodians have arrived. They seem nice. Hopefully. We've delegated and explained most of the tasks required in the cafe. So hopefully they will be a bunch of responsible and dedicated English Cafe-ians(?). Hahah.

Anyway, I will try my best to keep this updated as soon as possible, keeping track of my six months here left in Korea.
